Best Things to Do Near Moss Beach This Summer

What are the best things to do near Moss Beach in the summer?

Summer in Moss Beach centers on the tide pools at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, the coastal trails above Pillar Point, and a run of local events in nearby Half Moon Bay, from the Wine & Jazz Festival to the weekly farmers market. You'll also want to build in time for the seals at the overlook and a seafood dinner at the historic Moss Beach Distillery. Most of it is within a short walk or drive of any stay on this stretch of coast.

Moss Beach doesn't need much dressing up in the summer. The fog burns off by late morning, the water in the tide pools warms just enough to make wading in comfortable, and the coastline settles into the kind of slow, sun-lit rhythm that makes people start planning their next trip before they've even left. If you're mapping out a few days here, this is where to spend them.

Start at the tide pools

Fitzgerald Marine Reserve is the reason most people find their way to Moss Beach in the first place, and it earns the reputation. Three miles of rocky, intertidal coastline hold some of the most diverse tide pool ecosystems in California — sea stars, anemones, hermit crabs, and the occasional octopus, all visible without a wetsuit or a boat. Time your visit around low tide (check the tide charts before you go; a minus tide in the morning is your best bet) and bring shoes you don't mind getting wet.

Just above the reserve, the Cypress Tunnel walk, from Cypress Avenue to the California Street parking lot, is a short, shaded stroll worth doing before or after the tide pools. And if you head south along the bluffs, the Pillar Point Bluff Trail gives you an easy-to-moderate walk with sweeping Pacific views and a look at Mavericks, the surf break that draws big-wave riders in winter but sits calm and photogenic in summer. From June through the fall, you'll likely spot seal pups resting near the overlook — bring binoculars if you have them.

After a morning spent barefoot in the tide pools, it's a five-minute drive back to 590 Stetson for a hot shower, a change of clothes, and an ocean view from the couch instead of a car window.

Round out the day in Half Moon Bay

A few miles down the coast, Half Moon Bay keeps a full summer calendar. The Coastside Farmers' Market runs Saturday mornings at Shoreline Station through the season, with organic produce, local cheese, and coastal crafts worth a slow browse. Later in July, the Half Moon Bay Wine & Jazz Festival and events like Whiskies of the World at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company give the evenings their own reason to head that way. Check current dates before you plan around any single event, since local calendars shift year to year.

For dinner, the Moss Beach Distillery is the obvious choice if you want history with your seafood — a Prohibition-era building with a view of the water and a menu of California coastal classics.

Make San Francisco your day trip, not your home base

At about 25 miles from downtown San Francisco, Moss Beach puts the city within easy reach without requiring you to stay in it. Spend a day in the Mission, at the Ferry Building, or wandering Golden Gate Park, then drive back down the coast in under an hour to a house that actually feels like a vacation — quiet, ocean-facing, and far enough from the city that the sound of the water replaces the sound of traffic. It's a pattern that works especially well from 590 Stetson, where the drive back ends with a private patio and a fireplace rather than a hotel hallway.

Summer here rewards an unhurried pace: a morning at the tide pools, an afternoon exploring Half Moon Bay, an evening on a patio watching the light change over the water. Most of what makes the season worth visiting for is within a few minutes' drive of wherever you're staying.

If you're thinking about a coastal getaway, I'm happy to answer any questions about the area or the house — reach out anytime.
